Shaundria’s story is one of many. Global Pathways connects students to life-changing international programs that bring together language and cultural understanding.
Follow her experience in China and see how your support transforms lives — one character at a time.
Shaundria McLaurin, a senior at Lindblom Math and Science Academy, is heading to the Zhejiang University International Winter Camp in Hangzhou, China. Her path to this opportunity began in Chinese class, where her teacher shared stories about how living and studying in China shaped him. Those experiences sparked her curiosity and planted the first seeds of a dream to explore China herself.
She followed that curiosity all the way to China herself, where she completed a month-long study abroad program that changed her life. She discovered her love for travel, built confidence, and gained independence. Those experiences convinced her to pursue this winter camp, even before she knew whether she could afford travel or be accepted. Her focus and determination paid off, and she earned a full scholarship from Zhejiang University and Chicago Partners, leaving only airfare as a remaining barrier.
Global Pathways stepped in with a $250 Travel Micro-Grant to help cover that last step.
Shaundria plans to study architecture and civil engineering, and she sees this opportunity as part of her long-term vision. Chinese architecture inspires her, especially its detail, history, and cultural meaning. Her goal is to design with intention and bring global awareness into her field. Studying Mandarin and exploring Chinese culture strengthens her creativity and helps her understand how design can connect people across cultures.
She’s most excited to immerse herself in China’s food and architecture. From traditional steamed buns to historic temples, she’s eager to experience details she’s only studied in books. She also knows each day in China will offer something new through excursions, hands-on learning, and cultural exploration.
Shaundria is deeply involved at Lindblom. She plays tennis and badminton, participates on the poetry team, tutors students in math and English, and serves as a mentor. She believes her school’s commitment to opportunity shaped her into a stronger student and leader. She hopes her own journey encourages other students not to be afraid to step outside their comfort zone.
She thanks her Chinese language teachers, her parents, her siblings, and her entire support system for encouraging her to try again and pursue this opportunity.
This winter, she’ll represent Chicago, Lindblom, and Global Pathways abroad. Her journey shows what’s possible when curiosity, preparation, and community support come together.
